How to Join
Anyone with an interest in kite flying, be it trick, power or traction, is welcome to come along, have a chat, and watch what we get up to. Then, if they wish, and after purchasing insurance, take part in a free taster session. Here's everything you need to know to have a go and join the SKF (Currently there is no membership fee - yes it's free!): Getting Started:Our meetings and events are the best ways to get chatting about kites and ask questions so come along and meet us! The places we fly can be found in the Flying Sites section but we fly at Lodge Moor every Thursday during British Summer Time and have fornightly socials during the winter months. We offer free 30 minute taster sessions (see below as insurance is required), for all ages starting at 6 years old. Please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you want to find out when we can fit you in or just pop up to "Splodge" one week. To have a go at Power Kiting you will need to be free of any injuries, bring along a helmet (a cycle helmet will do and we have some spares if you forget), and wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty (especially in winter) with strong shoes. Anyone is more than welcome to come up and chat to us at anytime to see what we get up to, see how it's done, and ask questions. |

Insurance: Although membership of the SKF is free you will need 3rd party liability insurance, which is around £15 a year, BEFORE your initial taster session. Insurance is also ESSENTIAL if you wish to try buggying or land boarding. All SKF members must have British Power Kitesports Association membership which includes insurance that covers you for scudding, boarding, buggying, and surfing. Certain festivals, inland sites, and beaches we use require this insurance as a prerequisite for doing kite traction activities. Your name will appear on their stats page when your insurance has been processed. For trick/stunt kite fliers our members use the Midland Kite Fliers for their insurance. If you don't have insurance you are more than welcome to come up and chat to us to see what we get up to, see how it's done, and ask questions. Your Own Kites: If you intend to come regularly then after a couple of sessions with us you will need to purchase your own equipment. This is to allow us to be able to offer taster sessions to other people and also use the kites ourselves! For advice on which kites to buy click here or talk to us on our forum. If your budget wont stretch to a new kite then check out our for sale section for some bargains! If you buy a new kite (or a badly set up second hand one) one of the most common mistakes we see is with the colours of the lines, handles, bars, kite killers, etc. If they are colour coded red and blue, like most are these days, then RED IS LEFT and BLUE IS RIGHT. Our FAQ: Check out our frequently asked questions for more info. |
